Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are among the most extensively researched supplements in veterinary medicine, with documented benefits in dermatology, joint health, cardiovascular support, renal protection, and cognitive function. Product quality varies widely in EPA/DHA concentration, oxidation status, and contaminants. Rx Vitamins Ultra EFA is a concentrated liquid omega-3 from quality marine sources, so an effective dose is achieved in a small volume. Available in 236 ml and 472 ml.
Marine-sourced omega-3s provide EPA and DHA directly, bypassing the inefficient ALA conversion that dogs and cats perform poorly. Well suited to dogs with chronic skin and coat issues, arthritis, and CKD where omega-3s are part of the management protocol.
Key ingredients: EPA (anti-inflammatory; modulates prostaglandin and cytokine activity), DHA (essential for neurological function and cell membrane fluidity), in a purified marine fish oil base.
Directions: dose by body weight as directed by your veterinarian. Add directly to food at each meal. Refrigerate after opening to prevent oxidation, and use within 90 days of opening. Therapeutic anti-inflammatory doses are higher than most owners provide - for a large dog with arthritis or CKD this can be 3-5 g EPA+DHA per day. Coat improvement typically appears at 6-8 weeks; joint benefits at 4-6 weeks. At very high doses omega-3s can prolong bleeding time - inform your vet before surgery.
