Hydrocortisone Ear Drops for Itchy, Inflamed Ears in Dogs & Cats
An inflamed ear canal is one of the most uncomfortable problems a pet can have. Head shaking, scratching at the ear, redness and heat all point to irritation of the external ear canal, and the itch-scratch cycle that follows often does more damage than the original trigger. ProConcepts Pro-Otic HC is a 1% hydrocortisone otic solution used alongside specific therapy to calm that inflammation while the underlying cause is treated.
Key Benefits:
- 1% hydrocortisone helps reduce itching, redness and inflammation in the external ear canal
- Designed as an adjunct to specific therapy for non-specific otitis externa
- Acidifying, drying base helps flush exudate and debris from the canal
- Suitable for both dogs and cats
- Health Canada authorized veterinary drug, DIN 02154455
- Developed by a Canadian veterinary health company serving clinics since 2007
How Pro-Otic HC Works
Hydrocortisone is a topical corticosteroid that interrupts the inflammatory cascade in the ear canal lining. Applied directly into the ear, it works where the irritation is rather than throughout the body, which is why topical delivery is the standard approach for external ear inflammation. Reducing swelling in the canal also opens it up, allowing any specific therapy your veterinarian has prescribed to reach the tissue it needs to reach. The propylene glycol and lactic acid base lowers the pH of the canal and helps dry it out, conditions that discourage the overgrowth that often accompanies chronic ear problems.
Ingredients
Active: Hydrocortisone 1% w/v.
Inactive: Propylene glycol, ethanol, lactic acid, parachlorometaxylenol, fragrance, FD&C Blue No. 1.
Directions for Use
Clean the external ear first to remove exudate and debris. Instill 5 to 10 drops into the ear canal twice daily, then massage the base of the ear to spread the solution. Use alongside the specific therapy your veterinarian has prescribed for the diagnosed cause. If there is no improvement after five days, stop and consult your veterinarian.
Cautions
For external (otic) use only. Avoid contact with the eyes. Do not use if the eardrum is damaged or perforated. Store in a cool, dry place between 15 and 30°C and do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Supplement Advisor's Note
The word "adjunct" on this label matters. Hydrocortisone controls the inflammation but does nothing about what caused it, and ear inflammation in dogs and cats is usually secondary to something else: allergy, a yeast or bacterial overgrowth, a foreign body, or moisture trapped after swimming. Using a steroid alone can make the ear look better while the actual problem continues underneath. The contraindication for a damaged eardrum is the other one to take seriously, which is why an ear that has never been examined should be looked at by a veterinarian before anything goes into it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from regular Pro-Otic ear cleaner?
Regular Pro-Otic is a cleaning and drying solution for routine maintenance. Pro-Otic HC adds 1% hydrocortisone, making it a medicated product intended for ears that are actively inflamed rather than for weekly cleaning.
Do I need a prescription for Pro-Otic HC?
Pro-Otic HC carries a Health Canada DIN and is not a prescription-only product, though it is distributed through veterinary channels. It is intended for use alongside a diagnosis and treatment plan from your veterinarian.
How quickly should I see improvement?
Inflammation and itching often ease within the first few days. If there is no improvement after five days of twice-daily use, stop and speak to your veterinarian, as the underlying cause likely needs different treatment.
Can I use it on a puppy or kitten?
Pro-Otic HC is labelled for dogs and cats without an age restriction, but young animals with ear problems should be examined first. Ask your veterinarian before using any medicated ear product on a puppy or kitten.
Why can it not be used if the eardrum is damaged?
A perforated tympanic membrane allows solution to reach the middle ear, where these ingredients are not intended to go. If your pet has had a ruptured eardrum or you are unsure, have the ear examined before use.
