Heartburn and reflux: cooling the burn

Frequent heartburn deserves a proper plan, not just antacid after antacid. An Ontario pharmacist can assess reflux symptoms and prescribe when appropriate.

An occasional burn after a big meal is one thing. Heartburn that shows up several times a week — disturbing sleep, forcing you to keep antacids in every coat pocket — deserves a proper plan, not an endless chain of quick fixes.

What's actually happening

Reflux (GERD when it's frequent) is stomach acid washing up into the esophagus. Late heavy meals, alcohol, caffeine, smoking, certain medications, and lying down soon after eating all make it easier for acid to travel the wrong way.

The treatment ladder

Antacids neutralize acid for minutes — fine for rare episodes. For frequent symptoms, acid-reducing medications taken as a proper course work far better, and how you take them matters: some need to be taken before meals to work well, and a defined course with reassessment beats indefinite self-medicating. An Ontario pharmacist can assess reflux symptoms and prescribe when appropriate, free with a valid Ontario health card, and set a realistic review date rather than leaving you on acid reducers forever.

Take these signs seriously

Trouble or pain with swallowing, unintended weight loss, vomiting blood or black stools, chest pain with exertion, or new symptoms after 50 are not "just heartburn" — they need a physician promptly. Part of our job is making sure those cases don't get lost in the antacid aisle.
