Liver support for dogs: SAMe, milk thistle and when they're used

Few phone calls worry dog owners like the one that says "the liver values are elevated." Sometimes it's medication-related, sometimes age, sometimes a condition your vet is investigating. Whatever the cause, liver-support supplements are frequently part of the plan — and it's worth understanding why.

The two workhorses

SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) supports the liver's own antioxidant system — it helps replenish glutathione, the molecule liver cells use to protect themselves. Silybin, the active fraction of milk thistle, adds antioxidant support and is better absorbed when bound to phosphatidylcholine. Giving them correctly matters
