Every owner of a floppy-eared or water-loving dog knows the sound: the violent 2 a.m. head shake, the jingle of tags, the scratch-scratch-scratch. Ears are one of the most preventable trouble spots in dog care — if you have a routine before the trouble starts.
Why some dogs are ear-prone
Floppy ears trap warmth and moisture; swimming adds water; allergies inflame the canal from the inside. Put two of those together and you have a fermentation project. The goal of routine care is simple: keep the canal clean, dry, and slightly acidic so nothing unwanted takes hold.
The routine
Once every week or two — and after every swim — fill the canal with a proper veterinary ear cleanser (EpiOtic Advanced, Oti-Scrub, or the gentle Avena Sativa cleanser are all on our shelves), massage the base until it squelches, let your dog shake, then wipe what surfaces with cotton. Never push swabs into the canal — you'll pack debris deeper. Thirty seconds, done.
Cleaning is prevention, not treatment
If the ear is red, swollen, painful, foul-smelling, or discharging — or your dog cries when touched near it — stop cleaning and see your veterinarian: infections need diagnosis (bacteria vs. yeast vs. mites) and prescription treatment, which we can dispense. Cleaning an infected ear just delays real care. Recurring infections are usually an allergy question worth pursuing, not bad luck.
