Feline stress rarely announces itself. It shows up sideways: a cat hiding more, grooming a bald patch onto a leg, spraying by the front door, or starting turf wars with a housemate of five years. Before it escalates, there's a well-stocked middle ground between "wait and see" and prescription medication.
Pheromones: changing the room, not the cat
Feliway Classic (diffuser and spray) replicates the facial pheromone cats deposit when they feel safe; Feliway Friends targets multi-cat tension specifically. Plug diffusers into the rooms where the cat actually lives, replace refills on schedule, and give them a couple of weeks — they're subtle by design. SerenEase spray is a handy option for carriers and car rides.
Oral calming support
Zylkene (alpha-casozepine) has good evidence in cats and sprinkles conveniently into wet food; Anxitane (L-theanine) comes as a palatable chewable many cats accept as a treat; Composure PRO combines several calming ingredients. Start before predictable stressors — moves, renovations, new pets, vet visits — rather than after the hiding starts.
Rule out the medical mimics
Two cautions: a cat urinating outside the box may have a urinary problem, not a behaviour problem — that's a vet check first. And sudden behaviour change in any cat (especially seniors) deserves a medical look before it's labelled stress. Calming support works best on a healthy cat in a managed environment.

This article is general information, not veterinary advice. Supplements support wellness — they do not treat, prevent, or cure disease, and they are not a substitute for veterinary care. Always follow label directions and check with your veterinarian before starting a supplement, especially if your pet takes medication or has a health condition.
