Selecting the right pharmacy for your pet's medication

At Orleans Community Pharmacy, we understand the importance of choosing the right pharmacy for your pet's medications. In Ontario, you have the right to request a written prescription from your veterinarian, which can be filled at the pharmacy of your choice.

Under Section 26 of the Ontario Veterinarians Act, your veterinarian must provide a written prescription if they do not dispense medication or if you request one — and they can give an oral prescription directly to an Ontario pharmacist.

No vet? Virtual care is an option

If you don't currently have a veterinarian or if your veterinarian is unable to provide a prescription, virtual veterinary consultation services are available through telemedicine providers such as Vetster, Telus Health MyPet, MetaVet, and SmartVet.

College of Veterinarians' guidelines

  • A veterinarian must comply with requests for prescriptions, which should be directed to Ontario pharmacists only, not internet pharmacies
  • They may charge a reasonable fee for the prescription
  • It's the client's responsibility to fill the prescription as they see fit, including out-of-province options
