Prescription Medications for Pets

Selecting the Right Pharmacy for Your Pet's Medication

At Orleans Community Pharmacy, we know how crucial it is to choose the right pharmacy for your pet’s medications. In Ontario, you have the right to request a written prescription from your veterinarian, which can be filled at the pharmacy of your choice. Discuss this option with your veterinarian for convenience and reliable service.

Key Regulations

According to Section 26 of the Ontario Veterinarians Act, your veterinarian must provide a written prescription if they do not dispense medication or if you request one. They can also give an oral prescription to a pharmacist in Ontario.

College of Veterinarians' Guidelines:

  • A veterinarian must comply with requests for prescriptions, which should be directed to Ontario pharmacists only, not internet pharmacies.
  • They may charge a reasonable fee for the prescription.
  • It's the client’s responsibility to fill the prescription as they see fit, including out-of-province options.
