Hemorrhoids are one of those conditions almost nobody wants to talk about — and almost everybody deals with eventually. Itching, discomfort, or a bit of bright red blood on the toilet paper: by mid-life, most adults have been there. The good news is that most cases settle with straightforward care.
Why they happen
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins around the rectum, aggravated by straining, constipation, long stretches of sitting, pregnancy, and heavy lifting. The single best long-term fix is making stools easy to pass: more fibre, more water, and not postponing bathroom trips.
What treatment involves
Short-term relief comes from sitz baths, gentle hygiene, and topical products that calm swelling and itch. When over-the-counter options aren't enough, prescription-strength combinations can do more — and in Ontario, a pharmacist can assess hemorrhoids and prescribe when appropriate, free with a valid Ontario health card. The consultation happens in a private room, takes a few minutes, and is far less awkward than most people fear.
One important caveat
Rectal bleeding should never be assumed to be hemorrhoids until the picture fits. Dark blood, blood mixed in stool, changes in bowel habits, weight loss, or a family history of bowel cancer mean a physician's assessment first — and we won't hesitate to send you there.
